About

Welcome to fellow
writers and young
people facing public
exams in English Language and Literature.
I’m Anthea. I studied English at Oxford University and spent forty years as a teacher of
young people, thirty of which as a head of department. I am a commercially published
author of over fifteen books – non-fiction, fiction and contemplative. I enjoyed a traditional
rural upbringing in Devon in the days when clothes were hand-me-downs and holidays were
spent pottering about in boats. After leaving university, I took a wild U-turn and joined a
spiritual group called The Brahma Kumaris. A cult, in short. But one which enabled me to
hone my thinking and writing skills without the distractions that ordinarily accompany a
more conventional lifestyle. I left it in 2000 and married my childhood sweetheart, John
Seal, in 2016.
I now live in Tunbridge Wells where I continue to write and teach young people on an
individual basis, either online or (preferred) in person. I love tailoring lessons to individual
needs and welcome any students sitting GCSEs or A Levels for last-minute cramming
sessions or more protracted stretches of tuition. I am passionate about making lessons both
rigorous and joyful. PowerPoints never feature; eccentrics are cherished.
I also run mentoring sessions for those needing help with university applications or those
simply in need of a sympathetic ear.
Last year my third novel, ‘Liftman’, was published to critical acclaim and on May 8th 2025 ‘A
Child of the Air’, the first in a trilogy of memoirs, will be released. This is an account of my
feral younger years during which time I stumbled unguided from one bizarre encounter to
another. It will be followed in six months by an account of my time with the Brahma Kumaris
when my family thought I’d gone crackers and I thought I’d found the secret to life. In effect,
the book is a love letter to India, a country where I spent many happy months when not at
work in London schools and later as Head of English at Kent College, Pembury. The third part
of the trilogy – ‘The Legacy’ – will follow: an account of how to make sense of life stripped of
the certainties of life in a cult.
I’m always on the look-out for interesting people of all ages – to teach, help, dive into good
conversation with, about life, literature and whatever might matter to us in combination.

Inspiring Minds Through Stories and Teaching
Sharing the experiences and knowledge I have gained with young people is very fulfilling for me. It’s about giving back and helping others to navigate the world and to be a success. How do I define success? Peace of mind, a thirst for continued learning and a smile on a students face when theyve completed the project they needed guidance with.

Anthea’s guidance transformed my writing and opened doors I never thought possible.

I couldn’t be happier with the mentorship I received; Anthea provided so much more than I expected. I’m more than what I thought I was capable of.
